Ipe (pronounced “ee‑pay”) is a dense, tropical hardwood primarily from trees in the Tabebuia and Handroanthus genera, native to Central and South America (especially Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia). It’s also marketed under names such as Brazilian walnut, ironwood, guayacan, and lapacho.
🪵 Key Physical & Mechanical Properties 1. Hardness & DensityExceptionally hard & dense: Ipe has one of the highest hardness ratings of commercial woods (~3,500–3,680 lbf on the Janka scale), making it much harder than oak or maple.
Very high density (~1,025–1,100 kg/m³ at 12% moisture), so boards are extremely heavy and solid.
Because of the density and interlocked grain, machining and cutting require sharp, carbide tools and pre‑drilling.
Ipe’s natural oils and tight, dense fiber structure give outstanding resistance to rot, decay, moisture, mold, and fungal growth – even in direct contact with soil or moisture.
Classified as Use Class 5 for outdoor exposure, meaning it can be used in direct contact with the ground or water without preservatives.
Naturally resistant to termites, ants and other wood‑boring insects due to inherent oils and tannins – reducing the need for chemical treatment.
Ipe has a Class A fire rating, equivalent to steel or concrete in fire tests, making it safer than most other woods.
Rich earth tones ranging from olive brown to deep chocolate brown, with occasional reddish or golden hues and fine to medium grain.
Ipe weathers naturally to a silvery‑gray patina over time if left untreated; original colors can be preserved with UV‑protectant oils.
Fine to medium texture, often straight but sometimes interlocked or irregular, which gives a refined yet robust visual appeal.
Difficult to machine: its hardness blunts tools faster than softer woods; precision cutting and heavy‑duty saw blades recommended.
Pre‑drilling is often needed for screws and fasteners to prevent splitting.
Ipe can last 25–75+ years outdoors with minimal maintenance, far outlasting most softwoods and many other hardwood
Ipe’s properties make it ideal for:
Outdoor decking & boardwalks (very high foot traffic)
Exterior cladding & siding
Fencing & privacy screens
Outdoor furniture & pergolas
Marine applications like docks and pool surrounds
Heavy‑duty flooring and industrial boards
