IPE (also called Brazilian Walnut, Lapacho, or Ironwood) comes from several tree species in the Handroanthus genus, native to Central and South America, especially Brazil.
It’s considered one of the hardest and most durable woods in the world.
🎨 Appearance & GrainColor:
Ranges from olive brown to dark reddish-brown
Darkens over time, especially when exposed to sunlight
Can weather to a silver-gray patina if left untreated outdoors
Grain:
Fine to medium texture
Mostly straight grain, sometimes interlocked
Surface:
Smooth, dense, and luxurious when finished
Hardness: Extremely hard
Janka hardness ≈ 3,680 lbf (over 3x harder than oak)
Density: Very high (it sinks in water)
Strength:
Exceptional bending strength and compression resistance
Stability:
Low shrinkage and excellent dimensional stability
Lifespan:
40+ years outdoors without chemical treatment
Weather Resistance:
Highly resistant to rain, sun, heat, and humidity
Rot & Decay:
Naturally resistant
Insects & Termites:
Naturally insect-resistant
Fire Resistance:
Class A fire rating (similar to steel and concrete)
Cutting & Drilling:
Difficult due to density
Requires carbide tools
Fastening:
Pre-drilling is essential
Stainless steel fasteners recommended
Finishing:
Oils best (like penetrating hardwood oils)
Does not absorb stains easily
Outdoor decking (very popular)
Cladding & siding
Boardwalks & bridges
Pergolas and fencing
Luxury flooring
Marine and waterfront structures
High-end furniture
Low maintenance structurally
To maintain brown color:
Apply UV-protective oil once or twice a year
If left untreated:
Turns silver-gray (still structurally sound)
Expensive compared to most woods
High upfront cost but excellent long-term value due to longevity and minimal replacement
Extremely durable
Natural resistance to rot, insects, and fire
Beautiful, rich appearance
Long lifespan with minimal upkeep
High cost
Heavy and hard to work with
Requires proper installation techniqueS

Ipe wood (pronounced ee‑pay) is a very dense and durable tropical hardwood from the Handroanthus (formerly Tabebuia) species group. It is native to Central and South America, especially Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and surrounding regions. It’s commonly known in the trade as:
Brazilian Walnut
Lapacho
Ironwood
Amapa, Guayacan, Madera Negra, Tahuari, Flor Amarillo, etc.
Ipe is prized for its strength, longevity, and natural resistance to decay, making it one of the most desirable woods for outdoor construction.
📏 Physical Appearance & AestheticsColor: Rich dark brown to olive brown; can display reddish, amber, or golden hues.
Grain: Fine to medium texture; grain usually straight but can be interlocked or slightly irregular.
Texture: Smooth, close‑grained surface with good natural lustre.
Colour Aging: If left untreated outdoors, it weathers to a silver‑grey patina over time. Oiling can help maintain original colour.
| Property | Typical Value / Description |
|---|---|
| Scientific Name | Handroanthus spp (formerly Tabebuia) |
| Origin | Central & South America |
| Density | ~1,050–1,200 kg/m³ (very high) |
| Specific Gravity | 0.85–1.08 |
| Average Dried Weight | ~69 lbs/ft³ (approx. 1,100 kg/m³) |
| Janka Hardness | ~3,500–3,680 lbf — one of the hardest woods available |
| Modulus of Rupture (MOR) | ~25,000+ psi — excellent bending strength |
| Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) | ~3,200,000 psi — high stiffness |
| Shrinkage (Green → Dry) | Radial 5.9–6.6%, Tangential 7.2–8.0%, Volumetric ~12–13% |
| Dimensional Stability | Very stable with low movement |
| Fire Rating | Class A (similar to concrete/steel) |
| Natural Durability Class | Class 1 (highest) |
On the Janka hardness scale, Ipe is 3–4 times harder than oak — extremely resistant to denting and wear.
High bending and compressive strength, making it suitable for structural uses.
Naturally high resistance to moisture, rot, fungi, mold, and wood‑eating insects.
Not typically rot‑treated because of its natural oils and density.
Achieves a Class A fire rating, equivalent to non‑combustible materials in some tests.
Very low movement from humidity changes, reducing warping, cupping, or twisting.
Challenging to Work With:
Extremely dense and hard — blunts tools quickly.
Requires carbide‑tipped blades, predrilling for fasteners, and stainless‑steel hardware.
Difficult to plane or screw compared to softer woods.
